Chain tensioner

Most horizontal chain drives need to incorporate some form of chain tensioner and this picture, shows the one that was used for Archimedes.
It consists simply of a spring loaded pivoted arm with a small loose sprocket wheel that bears against the slack portion of the chain and prevents the chain from falling off the main sprockets.
