Vertical Steam Engine :

This model is a freelance design that was built as a compliment to a similar styled horizontal steam plant that I constructed recently.

I decided to build this model to my own specifications, incorporating many of the features found on a typical steam engine of this style from century or so ago. I have tried to make the model as aesthetic as possible, and where necessary I have replaced realism with visual enhancements!

The engine features many working parts and a few non working dummy parts too. These include a working piston slide, a directional control valve which is just to the left of the crankcase, a spinning centrifugal governor, a cam driven water pump, shown to the right of the crankcase, crankshaft ball races, water injection from the water pump, a water tank with drain off and a top up stand pipe, boiler sight glass behind the flywheel, an inspection hatch above this, a flue damper which is controlled by a remote cable and lever, a firebox with glowing coals, whistle on the top of the boiler and a safety pressure relief valve and various valves and stops.

The base is a hardwood surround from an old wall clock.

Power is provided from a six volt supply, driving a mini Faulhaber gearmotor, mounted within the boiler. The dummy pressure gauge is to show the working pressure of the boiler.

The model went together very quickly with some 50 hours of work and minimum reworking.
